If we have hercules up and running, can we use that to learn SAS? hercules is an hardware emulation platform and it will need an operating system SAS for mainframes will certainly need a recent IBM operating sy and none of them ...

Hercules provides a hardware simulator. On top of that is needed the operating system (such as MVS 3.8, which is available without charge) and applications (such as CICS or SAS). You would have to contact 'SAS Institute to ...

think of Hercules as belonging to the family of virtualizers-hardware emulators ( VMware, Parallels, VirtualBox, ..., ..., ... ) You start VMware, attach a real/virtual cdrom and start the installation of windows, linux, whatever ...

Thanks but I don't quite understand the word "Hardware emulator"?? What is hardware telling me here? after that any program supported by the operating system running will work. I think I did not post well previously, I wanted to know that CICS should not be a free product so will I be able...

hercules is an HARDWARE emulator ...
You will need a full working operating system.
after that any program supported by the operating system running will work.
and it will not be simulated... it will be the real thing.

Thanks nicc. I've tried to follow up instructions provided by Anuj at this Forum http://zmainframes.com/viewforum.php?f=45 but I find it tough to follow. I got the hercules installed but to get the working OS under it...is nightmare.

You could try one of the turnkey Hercules offerings - Anuj posted a link the other day. I got it up and running with almost no problems. The problems arise when you get logged on - no ISPF and, so far, I find what documentation there is for ...

I findit tough to follow the instructions for Hercules. I'm not sure if I'll be ablr to make it work. Will try z390.
