Learning COBOL at home.

Post by shiv_san »

Hi,

Is there a possibility to learn COBOL at home? Like the way we do it in Mainframes? I know COBOL but there are some experiment which I don't want to do in office. Please advise how can I do that?

There are couple of ways to do that - like start with Hercules - however, it'd require to do some background work. Start with some open source COBOL compiler and take it from there.

Have you tried something yourself?

Edit: Had this thread open for long and didn't see the previous reply. That link takes you to a great place to start with, good luck.
Thanks,
Anuj

That's a paid course, no?

I have used the GnuCOBOL compiler on my home PC with much success. A program written for the mainframe can be run in GnuCOBOL with minimal changes (mostly SELECT statements and occasionally extensions that IBM has added over the years to the mainframe COBOL).

Thank you very much everyone. I've started looking at GnuCOBOL, Thanks again.

No, it is not a paid course. Have you visited the link? It's free material, communities, resources, courses, and many more.

I did but left it after navigating through thinking it'd be paid. We'll relook at it again, Thanks again.

I have tried using hercules but it's touch to maintain the system itself. Is there a way to keep it stable?
