What is Devops.

Post by Mini Nair »

Hi,

What exactly is Devops? I always thought that this was a question for open-source world, do we use it on mainframes?

Here's a place to start reading: https://www.ibm.com/z/devops

IBM z mainframes are extremely usable with open systems -- DevOps, Docker, Apache, Java, the cloud, etc. can all be used on z machines.

This is really interesting to know that we can use Devops on mainframes.

Devops and mainframe modernization are very definitely different. Mainframe modernization efforts may incorporate devops methods and facilities but mainframe modernization may be implemented without a single devops method. See https://blog.share.org/Article/moderniz ... e-together for more information.

Thanks Robert.

But I get more confused. If we are moving to these Devops tools shown in the link, then we are modernizing the mainframes, right?

But is not it that moving to Java based programs is considered as modernization?

From Cognizant at https://www.cognizant.com/us/en/glossar ... ernization
What is mainframe modernization?
Mainframe modernization is the process of migrating or improving an enterprise’s existing legacy mainframe footprint in the areas of interface, code, cost, performance and maintainability. In some instances, mainframe modernization can encompass the complete migration of code and functionality to a platform that is based on newer technology and/or hosted in the cloud.
Notice that by this definition, a mainframe modernization effort could take existing legacy code in COBOL and merely update it to object-oriented COBOL (which would not involve any Devops at all).
