Help in removing last digits from sequential file.

Hi,
I am in a new project. Over here only I am facing this problem. Many times, I found some sequential datasets have some number in the last 8 byte and don't get deleted even when in edit mode. Any proper way of removing them?

for fixed format datasets the last 8 bytes might be used for sequence numbering by ISPF.
before deleting them ask Your support why ( the sequence numbers ) are there
sequence numbers are seldom a problem,
unless by mistake somebody has renumbered an application dataset overwriting the last 8 bytes of each record.

I have used NUM ON, UNNUM followed by NUM OFF and it helped for this.
I have asked the support but they are not familiar with this behaviour.

Your support should be waware of the sequence numbers - they have been around since before TSO or ISPF. Try finding an old 80 column coding sheet, browse one online if need be, and look at the headings.
