Re: Possible now to switch to BI/hadoop?
Can we not have dedicated Forums here which talk about such technologies on mainframes? That will be great.

Mainframe infrstructure learnings.
Hi, Could someone please advise that how can one move in to the infrastructure side of the mainframes? I had worked as Programmer, Project Lead. manager and Architect. However, all of them are on Application side of it. If I want to move in to the infrastructure side of mainframes, where should I ge...

Re: Emulator and simulator in mainframe.
If I say I am using a simulator to connect to mainframes or if I say I am using an emulator to connect to mainframes, do they carry same or similar meaning? I have seen many people using them interchangeably.. We call Tn3270 as emulator and I think that correct way of saying is "I am using an ...

Thanks for the confirmation. I did well in the interview so my answer should have been correct back then. But I did not opt for the job.

Re: Printing a dataset in mainframe.
@Robert, actually we are trying to list down the ways to initiate a pritnt to printer. So that we can straqm line the proces sfor future. As AndDos said, "Create a one/two page in-house emulator print guide, distribute to the team and give it to new team members", we are in the proces sof ...

Re: Printing a dataset in mainframe.
Hi There are numerous ways to print a mainframe dataset 1. printing directly to the central mainframe printer. This might involve sending data directly to the printer SYSOUT class, as in the JCL sample above, or routing it to that class via SDSF, EJES etc 2. a variant of the above where you specify...

Re: Printing a dataset in mainframe.
do you think there can be a general JCL which can be used for printer? This will work and is pretty general: // EXEC PGM=IEBGENER,REGION=8M //SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=* //SYSIN DD DUMMY //SYSUT1 DD DISP=SHR,DSN=<DATASET.TO.PRINT> //SYSUT2 DD SYSOUT=A This assumes that sysout class A is defined at your si...

That's what (batch job) prino has suggested. Or you wanted to say something else?nicc wrote:Or, if you know exactly what you want to do, you may be able to use DFsort or IEB/ICEGENER.

Re: Edit a big sequential file in ISPF.
If you know ***exactly*** what you need to change, you can write an edit macro to make the required changes, and edit the dataset in batch, where there are possibly fewer restrictions on region size... [font=Calibri]Thanks. I understand that. I have never thought about the REGION parameter for this...

As the "log on " screen you were saying about is not visible at my office. So I think it is disabled The screen may be suppressed but I don't think it can be disabled. It is NOT required to display if the user id and password are provided (by a terminal session manager, for example). Th...

Re: Why SELECT * is not preferred in embedded SQL programs?
You don't 'not allow access' - you create a column and restrict access to it i.e. if you have a need to know that data and have the access then you can select it. If you don't have the authority then you cannot. Thanks! enrico, when I tried it worked for the table I used. I thinking that it can be ...

Re: Printing a dataset in mainframe.
I agree to your statements. I'm in this project and my observation says that: [ol][li]Most of us are undertrained in using the printer. We usually don't use it as it's a test printer but when there is a project for report generation it is used.[/li] [li]The support guy for this printer is from windo...

Re: Why SELECT * is not preferred in embedded SQL programs?
SELECT * when all you wanted was columns in an index prevents index-only access. And I'm sure there are other access path no-nos. It also occurs to me that if column data is (eg RACF) protected then the request will fail, whether you wanted columns you don't have access to or not. Of course an unqu...

Printing a dataset in mainframe.
We have a test mainframe printer in our project. Whenever I see a print going to it, there is a chaos. Someone would say some FTP error has occurred, some would say, call up support some would say there is wrong print. How do we ideally print a dataset to a mainframe printer. Do you use a some speci...

What are the other ways of passing data to a JCL to program?
Hi,
What are the other ways of passing data from a JCL to program?
According to me these are the possible ways:
1. PARM
2. Instream data
3. and datasets
Apart from these are there more ways. Let's assume we're not talking about CICS and IMS DC here.

Why SELECT * is not preferred in embedded SQL programs?
Why SELECT * is not preferred in embedded SQL programs? I can think of the following reasons: If the table structure is changed ( a field is added ), the program will have to be modified Program might retrieve the columns which it might not use, leading on I/O over head. but are these the only reaso...
