The IBM Z talent pool isn’t being replenished fast enough to sustain current supply, let alone meet future requirements. Adding to the pressure, mainframe use is growing fast, as the platform continues to prove itself uniquely reliable and well suited to modern real-time data management, blockchain and analytics. The Master the Mainframe contest, Legends of Z, IBM’s Talent Match network, Mainframe Playground and other initiatives are already working to close this skills gap, but there’s more that can be done.
Visit the IBM Systems Media Relevant Z microsite to see more articles and podcasts highlighting the role of the modern IBM Z mainframe to help you articulate its value to your leaders.

Re: Skills shortage
That's a good read. However, I don't observe that companies are making effort to keep the current work-force motivated enough...
Thanks,

When I tell somebody to RTFM or STFW I usually have the page open in another tab/window of my browser,
so that I am sure that the information requested can be reached with a very small effort

Re: Skills shortage
At least IBM should make Mainframe programming accessible to more people and not pay-wall it.
If someone wants to learn Amazon Web services, all they have to do is signup for a free-tier and play with all services they got. No hassle.
Even SAS offers a university edition for people to break into.
Only hope is zCloud has some free-tier ish Mainframe access for a year.
