Learning COBOL at home.
Learning COBOL at home.
Hi,
Is there a possibility to learn COBOL at home? Like the way we do it in Mainframes? I know COBOL but there are some experiment which I don't want to do in office. Please advise how can I do that?

Re: Learning COBOL at home.
There are couple of ways to do that - like start with Hercules - however, it'd require to do some background work. Start with some open source COBOL compiler and take it from there.
Have you tried something yourself?
Edit: Had this thread open for long and didn't see the previous reply. That link takes you to a great place to start with, good luck.

Re: Learning COBOL at home.
I have used the GnuCOBOL compiler on my home PC with much success. A program written for the mainframe can be run in GnuCOBOL with minimal changes (mostly SELECT statements and occasionally extensions that IBM has added over the years to the mainframe COBOL).
Re: Learning COBOL at home.
Thank you very much everyone. I've started looking at GnuCOBOL, Thanks again.

No, it is not a paid course. Have you visited the link? It's free material, communities, resources, courses, and many more.Supriya Pathak wrote: ↑Fri Apr 02, 2021 10:19 pmThat's a paid course, no?lchui wrote: ↑Wed Mar 31, 2021 12:03 pm Maybe try here? https://www.ibm.com/it-infrastructure/z/education

I did but left it after navigating through thinking it'd be paid. We'll relook at it again, Thanks again.

I have tried using hercules but it's touch to maintain the system itself. Is there a way to keep it stable?
